Mt Ruapehu's crater lake finally burst its banks (theyve been expecting it for sometime ) , and sent a huge wave down the river , but there seems to be little damage . This bridge was washed away on Christmas eve , 1959 , just before the overnite express hit it . That remains NZ's biggest railway disaster , with many killed .
Here's a time lapse photo of the lahar . the pillar in the photo would be 5 or 6 metres high i would say .
