Railroaders Appreciation Day
The Adirondack Scenic Railroad would like to extend an invite to all railroad employees, or members of railroad organizations or groups, to ride the rails with us. We know you will enjoy all that Central New York and the Adirondack Park have to offer.
Who:Railroad employees, or members of railroad organizations in good standing
When: Thursday, August 13, 2015
Where:Utica, NY traveling to Thendara (Old Forge), or Big Moose NY and return. (140 miles R/T)
Upon departure from Utica, NY the train travels North into the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. After a pickup in Remsen, the train will continue North to "Snow Junction" where the “GrandAdirondack Line” and freight line of the Mohawk Adirondack & Northern split. After going over and through some of the greatest scenery the Adirondacks have to offer, the train arrives at Thendara Station (Old Forge NY) Mile Post 58 at approximately 11:30am. At that point you will have two options as follows:
Option 1
Stay on the train as it heads North to Big Moose Station MP 70, (arrival approx. 12:15pm); this is also the highest (passenger) point ever served by the NYC, at over 2000' above sea level. Big Moose Station is now a beautiful restaurant that retains many of its original features. You can enjoy lunch during the layover before returning to Thendara (approx. 2 pm). Once atThendara, you can walk across the street to the restoredVanAuken’s Inn for a refreshment on the front porch, visit the bar, or take an hour trip downtown into Old Forge. The train will depart Thendara Station at 4:30pm and to return South back to Utica. Arrival back in Utica at 6:35 pm.
Option 2
When the train arrives in Thendara there are buses that transport you downtown, only about one mile up the road to the shopping area or the boat ride. You can spend 4 hrs. in the down town area visiting shops and restaurants before returning to the station for the trip back to Utica.
There are multiple hotels less the half a mile from the Utica Union Station if you would like to stay in Utica.
