Dozens of federal, state, and municipal officials gathered Monday morning to herald a proposed North Jersey commuter train line that would run from Hawthorne to Hackensack, with numerous local stations along the way - including five in Paterson.

Officials said the new rail line, which would use self-propelled, diesel rail cars, would spark $100 million in economic development opportunities throughout Passaic and Bergen counties, connecting the region's labor force to thousands of jobs while revitalizing neighborhoods around new stations. They said the line also would reduce pollution and congestion on highways in one of the country's most densely populated areas.
