Using 'www.thedieselshop.us' I can find which prime movers were used on which EMD models. What I'm interested in finding out is when were control stand changes made? Did the 'can' type control stand get replaced when EMD moved to the 645 engine?

Basically what I'm looking for is, what control stand type goes with which EMD locomotives...

Thanks!

Hey Rick, not entirely sure, but weren't control stands a road specific decision?

The can got replaced between 1956, and 1957, in the 9 series. New haven had GP9s built in 1956 with the can. B&M's were built in '57, and have the newer control stand. I have noticed the same dividing time line among the BN SD9s, which I ran. On the newer stand, the switches are on the sloped top, just below the gauges. The controller has the selector with the ratchet.

The 30. 35,and 40 series have a stand similar to the modern ones found in the -2 through to using crt screens. The gauges are smaller, the load meter goes one way for both power and db. They also had the throttle and a selector. The earlier selectors ratcheted, but later ones slid left for db, and right for power. Some roads put in newer controllers with a db lever. This was because of runaways where the engineer thought he was in db, but was in power. Some were just changed out when the switches inside wore out.
