Does anyone on here know exactly when the tracks were removed on the CRI&P line N/S through Nichols, IA? How about the short branch line that ran E/W between Nichols and Lone Tree? Thanks.

I don't have that info handy, but the Iowa DOT has a list of abandonment info on their website. It lists each abandonment by ICC/STB number, railroad and date with end points and mileage.

According to the Iowa DOT railroad map site (http://www.iowadot.gov/iowarail/railroa ... aphome.htm), it looks like the north-south line from Cedar Rapids to Burlington was abandoned in the 1980s, and from Nichols to Lone Tree in the 1950s. Sorry, the site isn't any more specific, though it's pretty cool to look through.

Thanks, Bartman and mtuandrew: lots of great info on that Iowa DOT website.

11/10/10 will mark the 30th anniversary of the official abandonment of all Rock Island lines in Iowa.
