Born in 1870, Barney Casey worked for awhile as a streetcar motorman in Superior, Wisconsin (circa 1891), before being ordained as a Roman Catholic priest (under the name of Father Solanus Casey) in 1904. He had assignments in Yonkers NY, New York NY, Detroit MI and Huntingdon IN during the next 54 years. He died in 1958.
Today the former streetcar motorman is a candidate for saint-hood in the Roman Catholic church, in recognition of the healings and conversions associated with his priestly ministry. Although his contibutions to the church are far greater than his contributions to railroading, any historian must recognize him as a former railroader.
