This railroad provided locos to the Grey Lumber Company Lines
mentioned here earlier. The surviving steamer in New Jersey was
one of the engines that came from the SS&S. There are books
dealing with the narrow gauge lines in Southside Virginia that
deal with the more extensive narrow gauge common carriers.
By the way, for almost all of the 19th century, standard gauge
was 5 ft in this region.
A local historical society is struggling manfully to rebuild an
ancient 3 ft. gauge box car, and has details on both the lumber
mills, and SS&S equipment, including some pix of locos that went
to Grey Lumber on their website.
