The Cape main has been under rehabilitation by Barletta Engineering Heavy Division this spring with new ties / ballast / tree & brush clearing / replacing worn rails and should be finishing up sometime in June, then switching over to the Falmouth Secondary next. Over the past couple of years numerous crossings have been completely rebuilt on the Cape main / Falmouth Secondary as well. Probably won't see any increase in the 25-30 mph speed range unless they upgrade the rails and replace the NH 107 lb. rail which has been in place since 1915

These new bids are to continue completion of grade crossing rehabilitation & signal upgrades started a couple years ago on the various lines listed. Good to see Capital improvements continuing to replace deteriorated / obsolete infrastructure so trains can operate safely and up to speed

Cape Flyer Flyer Friday had 115 out of Boston and 96 into Hyannis. Saturday's train had 88 passengers out of Boston.

Article in Cape Cod Times about the unfortunate Cape Flyer accident last night. Not a good way to end the seasonal service for sure as the Train always wins when trespassers ignore the warning signs. Still, it certainly could have been avoided for sure. Not much details about it so far but certainly the Flyer couldn't have been going that fast either at that location.

An updated version of this article states that it was a teenager who died by suicide. RIP. Transit Police said previously that the person intended to enter the right of way. Absolutely no indication it was caused by careless trespassing.

I was down at Buzzards Bay with friends to see it pass. Heard the whole thing on the scanner. Sad. The Flyer had about 210 / 27 bikes out of Hyannis and has picked up another 47 at Bourne Station before the incident. Relief crew was called, train was not released until 1010PM, which was about a 3 hour delay. We tipped off the 10 or people waiting at Buzzards of the situation.

It was a lot more packed on that train than I’d expected. Unfortunately the capacity limitations from Boston to Braintree limit what should be daily service from Buzzards Bay.

The first year was extended at the last minute until mid-October, but that was a bust — partly because it was announced with little/no notice.

This would have been a good year to extend the Cape Flyer season as the Bourne Bridge is being reduced to 1 lane each way for maintenance starting September 18th. Could have been a big help with the traffic congestion that always comes with maintenance on the Canal bridges.

I was thinking about this the other day: Is there any way there could be cross-honoring between the MBTA/CCRTA and P&B and/or Peter Pan? At least for departures from Hyannis? We went to the Cape on Monday. I’d prefer that we weren’t there eight hours before heading back north — that’s a long day.

I agree 100% with your sentiment, wicked. I made a similar day trip to Hyannis on a gorgeous early August Saturday and was ready to head home 6 hours after arrival after walking several miles to the nearby beach, taking a harbor cruise, having a nice outdoor lunch at Spanky's, and finally window-shopping Hyannis' small business district.

We were exhausted and had no choice but to wait 2 hours at the un-air conditioned Hyannis Transportation Center on rock hard benches. While the CapeFlyer was a good ride both ways, an option to return on an earlier bus would have been welcome!

Lots of buildings in New England aren't air conditioned, especially near the water or in the mountains where it isn't usually very hot.

CapeFlyer HSP #2000 has a new assignment now that the summer is over - here it pushing inbound Needham line train 612 out of the Heights OT.
