Forty six years after Conrail, what of the DL&W remains in operation - especially that by either CSX or NS?

Of course, the lines over which NJTransit operates and Short Lines such as from Slateford to Scranton, but what else?

Enquiring mind wants to know.

The Utica Branch Chenango Forks-Utica plus the Syracuse Branch Binghamton-Syracuse, both presently operated by the NYS&W.

From west to east:

Depew, Lancaster & Western between Depew and Lancaster, New York.
Rochester Southern between Greigsville and Groveland, New York.
Bath & Hammondsport between Wayland and South Corning, New York.
CSX Transportation between Oswego and Syracuse, New York.
New York, Susquehanna & Western between Syracuse, Utica, and Binghampton, New York.
Norfolk Southern between Binghampton, New York, and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
Luzerne County Redevelopment Authority between Kingstown and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
North Shore between Northumberland and Berwick, Pennsylvania.
Reading & Northern between Wilkes-Barre and Matins Creek, Pennsylvania.
Norfolk Southern between Easton and Hackettstown, New Jersey.
New Jersey Transit between Hackettstown, Gladstone, and Hoboken, New Jersey.

So Mr. Norman, quite a lot, actually. Well over 50%; however, most of it's no longer connected and is scattered among a bunch of owners. With the exception of the commuter lines in New Jersey and I guess the Reading & Northern, it's all branchline rather than mainline.

There is a site called "Mississippi Rails" that has google earth maps of various railroads. It's great to see what's still around and what's not. https://www.msrailroads.com/Google_earth.htm

Sure appreciate the comprehensive compilation you made for the forum, Mr. Shortline.

But it is a case of the DL&W's "overhead" traffic had other routes over which to be handled and their on-line - anthracite coal- had simply "dried up".

Sad for a road that had built such magnificent physical plant.

FWIW, CSX is only operating Syracuse to Baldwinsville. Baldwinsville to Fulton is railbanked with crossings removed. Fulton to Oswego never belonged to CSX, Conrail sold it to Niagara Mohawk for their oil trains and it's since been sold a couple of times further, I don't know the name of the entity who currently owns it but a train has not been up there in over 20 years. The line just barely reaches Oswego, then connects to a short section of former NYC along which the unloading tracks are located.

I would consider the portion NS operates below Binghamton to be a main line or secondary main line. NS runs all it's Tier traffic this way now, save what gets handed off to NYS&W.
