What was the meaning of the white end? Sorry I don't have a better photo. Photo is NY so I posted here. Thanks.

Right under the "B&O" in the near car, it appears to say "MofW service". I'm guessing those are for ballast service, or perhaps cinder loading (which were often used for ballast)

usually it signifies that on that end car has rotary coupler so car can be dumped in rotary dumper.

Ballast service makes sense. It's being loaded in LeRoy.

See photo - that's from 1950's or 60's, no rotary couplers on THOSE cars.

I would guess the lettering stenciled on the next car on the white patch would clarify, but the photo is too low-res to read it.
