I have to wonder who (i.e., the author or the Guardian) chose the photo to accompany the Chicago-San Francisco portion; it's not on the route described.

The curse of non-railway journalists and/or sub-editors writing about railway topics...

Seems to be a worldwide complaint.

There was a story the other day in the local newspaper here about Kenya Railways opening a new commuter service, that is a passenger train on the metre-gauge line. It was illustrated with a photo of a freight train on the standard gauge line.
