Small article in Newsday that the MTA is putting a "request for proposal" for wheel impact load(hotbox) and freight car tag readers around the Queens Village area. Figured the nod to tracking freight cars was worth a post. They want to install them on Metro North also. It will be interesting to see how the hotbox detectors work with commuter trains which are constantly on/off the brakes which may in some cases give a false alarm for the detectors.

I'm pretty sure most hotbox detectors work by comparing the temperature of one axle against another to determine if there is a defect. So that shouldn't pose a problem.

Equipment is also going to be installed on the New Haven and Hudson Lines.
