It is very important for the Bayonne Bridge to be finished by the time the canal is done. They have fast tracked this thing so much to ensure it will be. If the ships can't get in when they are ready, they'll call other ports. It seems the plan is to detour around portage bridge at least until the new bridge is completed. Like most projects, it keeps getting pushed back...

Just to stir things up a little, what with the Panama Canal expansion causing some lively discussion:

National Public Radio (NPR) is reporting on the considerable forward progress of a proposed canal to be constructed across Nicaragua. The route across Nicaragua will be a longer and slower route, thus to be an effective competitor, the canal is being designed to handle much larger ships than the expanded Panama Canal will be able to handle. The project appears to have serious financial backers including, of course, the government of Nicaragua.

One can only imagine what this would do to rail traffic patterns in the east if completed.

When is the Bayonne Bridge going to be completed?
Any news as to when/if NS might tap into this new service lane?

The final reconstruction of the bridge will end in 2016, but the 215 foot clearance to let ships through will be done by the time the canal is completed.... still tentatively scheduled for June 2015. PANYNJ stands to lose a lot of traffic if it is not completed by then, so it's pretty high on their priority list.

Thanks very much for that info........certainly makes a huge difference! ;-)

Of course when I say tentatively, I mean verrrrrrrry tentatively......

Keep your eye on the CP line out in Pennsylvania. If the rumored dropping of the CP Allentown operations happens, NS will have to find other means to transport their dockside intermodal. Its not traffic they want to give up.

The rumors about the CP giving up the D&H to NS in the not too distant future are as loud as they've ever been....

Is this for the whole railroad or just certain segments?

Mechanicville south is what was reportedly under discussion some time back. Don't know if there is any more substance to the situation now. Could be one of those stories that recirculates every few months. Just like the Eastern Tier, time will tell, I guess.

Wasn't there an OCS with CP and NS officials last year? Maybe something will be announced soon? On the other side of things what about the oil boom? and CP clearing line-side poles on the D&H?

What is the question about the oil boom?

I wouldn't read too much into CP clearing line poles.

Is CP holding on for oil traffic? wasn't that why they didn't pull the plug on the D&H already?

CP handles a lot of oil traffic, but running down the D&H south of Binghaton is unlikely.
