B&P Wooden Trestles Fast Vanishing in Pennsylvania
The Northern Subdivision of the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad between Butler and Petrolia, Pa., is known for its wooden trestles, but many of them are being replaced with modern structures.
Currently, a large curved trestle at Chicora is being replaced by a steel structure that is expected to be finished by early December.
The railroad will then move on to replace its last large wooden trestle. Work on that project at Iron City is expected to begin in March 2014.
A smaller small wooden trestle near Chicora is not visible from public property.
An earthen fill replaced the trestle at Divener after it was destroyed by a suspicious fire in 2005.
Trains continue to use the line Monday through Thursday. Construction work is done on Friday through Sunday.
