You mean like the old GM yard on the NEC, or something?

@pdtrains Could be but what on earth are they looking to do there? Hasn’t been a train there in quite some time. NS used to park stuff there but they don’t anymore.

Old photos of NS equipment parked at Stiles Street Yard.

NS 9446 and CP 7022 (Navy Heritage Unit) are tied down in Linden. More specifically Tremleys Point, if they are still tied down there.

Edit: NS 6E4 should be bringing CN 3233 in soon. It’s a veterans unit.

Here’s some pictures of Stiles Yard. Note the ballast train. New signal flags on the south side as well as the line being re connected to the yard at the south end as well.

Isn't Stiles St Yard the yard next to the former auto factory that NJ Transit is rehabbing to store trains during hurricanes?

The Stiles St. Yard is next to the former auto-factory but NJ Transit is NOT rehabbing that yard.

The NJ Transit rehab project you are thinking of is called the Delco Lead Storage and Inspection Facility project. It is further south on the NEC near the Jersey Avenue stop and involves expanding County Yard.

I was wondering if this work is being done so Stiles can be used as overflow for Oak Island and whatnot. Tons of congestion there…

Highly unlikely Stiles St yard is being fixed up for freight service. Amtrak and NJT have major aversions to freight on the NEC. Most likely NJT storage.

EDIT: It was noted several posts back there was an Amtrak work train in the yard. I doubt Amtrak is fixing it up for the benefit of Conrail.

FWIW, there is a "back door" from Stiles St yard to the Chemical coast (Garden State Secondary). Somewhere it was posted in the last week or so that the back door is being reconnected.

What is your source that you can boldly say "highly unlikely" Stiles Street yard is being fixed up for freight when that's all it used to handle? Also, what is your source that you can say "most likely" NJT storage when NJT has never touched those tracks and they are building a new NJT storage facility further south at Delco and County? If you are just guessing, then I would not use "highly unlikely."

NJ Transit does have an executed agreement to use a number of tracks in Stiles Street Yard. That being said, for the intended use, the yard requires no improvements or upgrades by NJT. To be specific, NJ Transit is not performing any work at Stiles St at this time.

Conrail and NS are working on the Stiles Street yard. You can see the CR and NS track equipment if you go by when they are working. This yard is being rehabbed for freight use and there is a connection to the garden State that is currently in use. As I said before, stay tuned but be patient and all your questions will be answered in time.

OK...so I finally checked the goog, and looked at stiles st yard, etc. Pretty el huge-o yard. 15 tracks or so with a 4 track extension to the west.

The "Back door" that connects to the Chemical Coast, AFAIK, is the ex-CNJ Reforatory branch. Still used to access some chemical plants, and was CNJs access to the Linden GM plant

I can see it being used for freight car storage....but to base ME-1 out of there doesnt make a whole lot of sense. Cars from Oak Island would have to have a separate crew come down the Chem coast, and then back to Stiles St yard. It would be an extra crew and and extra days transit time just to save a few miles of running on the NEC.
