MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) late last week unveiled plans for structural repairs and improvements at the 34th Street-Penn Station subway complex.

The work includes leak mitigation and repairs to the structural steel and concrete infrastructure, such as station entrances, walls and ceilings.

Crews also will upgrade electrical systems and install new flooring in mezzanine areas, NYCT officials said in a press release. Two mezzanines will be upgraded with glass barriers, security cameras, LED lighting, and enhanced signage for easier navigation.

Work is slated to begin May 20 and continue for about eight months. The subway complex includes stations on the Seventh Avenue and Eighth Avenue rail lines.

Usually these projects require shutting down the whole station or a station platform. In this case, they are just replacing parts of it at a time.

Considering it is the main terminus from Penn Station to subway, it is a very good and needed project. Esst side access project won’t be finished for a few more years and people coming from LIRR normally connect into Penn Station and then many take subway which is most efficient way to get across the city.

Apparently the other station projects appear to be postponed indefinitely and they moved onto this one which I also agree is more importan due to its key location as it impacts more people.

My own subway station could see a remake and that wasn’t even in the previously announced projects which got postponed.
