A Virgin Pendolino has crashed near Oxenholme on the route between Preston and Glasgow.

Latest reports suggest no-one killed but a few people seriously injured and many slightly injured.

At the time of posting there are no details of the cause, though clearly an obstruction on the track is a possibility, and or a track defect.

Yes, one dead.

They are now mentioning a points problem but only as something they are investigating.

The line speed there is about 90 mph.

People can take the east coast route for Scotland. For local journeys there will be buses.
The train itself was little damaged, as is usually the case with these fast trains - a TGV came off the rails and was hardly damaged.

Photos seem to show the passenger coaches stayed fairly intact after leaving the rails, with only the lead unit appearing to have sustained major damage in an accident at 95 mph. It is sad to hear of a fatality and so many injuries, but the construction of the cars appears to have been able to prevent further tragedy.
