NYC Senciling

I'm curious...why do we still see NYC stenciling on freight cars today? I'm not talking old stenciling but rather recent re-stenciling. Is NYC an entity of some sort, leasing rolling stock. I see it primarily on gons and hoppers.

These cars were former Conrail cars and upon the break-up of Conrail the cars going to CSX were lettered NYC and the cars going to the Norfolk Southern were lettered PRR.

That's pretty interesting. Makes me wish I'd see some old NHRR stenciling!
