Is this considered new steam? I am truly impressed by this project. I just might go to England for the inagural run!

I was looking through old issues of Railway Age a few weeks ago and I believe I came across the ad that mxdata mentioned. The title of the ad is SAFETY and it is all black and white, issued by the American Locomotive Company, I recall it was around 1935. It talked about how no passengers had been killed in accidents involving steam locomotives the year before. It was a very strange ad.

David Wardale's 5AT "is a totally new steam locomotive design, incorporating the latest proven steam locomotive technology, for hauling main line steam charter and railcruise trains". Wardale is well known for his modification of South African steam locos.

The May 2007 Railway Magazine in the UK has an article which suggests that the oil crisis in the 1970s caused the Burlington Northern Railroad and Bethlehem Steel Company "to seriously examine the feasibility of building" new 2-10-4 3-cylinder 6,000hp locos in the USA to a 1946 Andre Chapelon design. US railfans who were around at the time might be able to comment on how seriously it was considered?

The same article notes that main line steam locos were still being built in 1999 in China with two SY 2-8-2s produced that year and an unconfirmed rumour that another one has been seen with a maker's plate dated 2000. And that China also considered building the Chapelon design in 1974, but instead opted for the less powerful QJ 2-10-2.
