New Jersey Public Service Trolley Trailer Being Dismantled

While going to work this morning, I noticed that the New Jersey Public Service Trolley Trailer that has for many years been used as a yard office for a construction company in Union, NJ is being dismantled. As of this morning, the metal car body appears intact but has been gutted out. The car body, located in the construction yard, can be easily seen from east bound Rt.22 just past the Rahway Valley RR crossing near the landmark "flagship". It is about 75 feet off the highway and along side the R.V.R.R. right of way. I was told many years ago that this car is a trailer that was hauled by a trolley to increase capicity during rush hours.

The Journal Square trolley shed on Sip Avenue in Jersey City is being demolished. The last streetcar passed through in 1949 however busses used the terminal prior to the Journal Square Transportation Center opening. Presently the area is used as a parking lot but the loop rails are breaking through the pavement. Note the small news stand had been the waiting room.
Every year there is always less surviving.

Made a trip to Journal Square this date. I was amazed at first, then sadden. The historic trolley car terminal on Sip Ave was being dismantled. This terminal is, was, almost 100 years old. It is one of the oldest trolley car terminals, if not the oldest, in the entire United States. Its destruction is another example of the lack of civic pride in Jersey City's historic landmarks.

Was a bit surprised there was no mention of it by the landmarks commirssion, or the Jersey Journal newspaper whose offices are directly across the street.
At least we have New York City that appreciates its heritage and preserves all sorts of transportation artifacts, such as the surviving Queensboro Bridge trolley subway terminal kiosks.

Public Service trailer #4584, that was in a contractor's yard on Route 22 just east of the Rahway Valley RR crossing, has been saved and transported to the Shore Line Trolley Museum at Brantford Ct.

Well I quess their is an angel who watches over these things.

Now if only something can be done at the Jersey City terminal. Went by there today and no additional dismantling has take place.

Just received January 2005 issue of Railpace Newsmagazine.
On pg.34 is a photo of Public Service Trailer #4584, 1921 Osgood-Bradley. This is the car from Union,NJ. It is shown at its new home, the Shore Line Trolley Museum in Branford CT. Caption notes it is one of only three Public Service Cars preserved. Also notes that an exterior cosmetic restoration is planned.

A PS trailer had been used as a waiting room at Exchange Place years ago, and had been continually reduced in size over the years until it disappeared completely.
Two trailers were built into a marina building alongside the NY&LB at Brielle. Saw them perhaps 20 years ago, are they still there?
