OSSIPEE — State Rep. Jonathan Smith, who is also a selectman in Ossipee, has filed legislation for the creation of a master plan for the rail line that runs between Conway and Ossipee.

Smith (R-Ossipee) sponsored HB 1468, “Directing the department of transportation to develop a Conway branch rail line master plan.”

The Conway branch line is 21 miles long and runs from Route 28 in Ossipee to West Main Street in Conway. It is owned by the state DOT but is being managed by the New Hampshire State Parks.

If passed, the bill would require the New Hampshire Department of Transportation to complete a master plan for the Conway branch rail line north of Route 28 to Conway by Dec. 31 of this year.

What is State Rep Smith's agenda? Pro-trail or pro-rail or pro-snowmobile? You don't launch a study without having a direction you want it to point in.

If the emails I sent him last year are anything to go by, his stance is pro-do something with the Conway Branch. That said, I think he leans more towards rail, but wants to actually catalyze the state into doing something. The segment's been out of service since the 1970s.

According to some social media posts, It looks like NHN is getting former MBTA 904.

"Out of service" as of 5/23/24 going by this list. Is it being acquired as a parts source for 1801 or will this become their 1802?

Technically the 904 was donated to the 470 club. Depending on the mechanical condition, it will either be parted out and used to keep the clubs units going. Or if its in good shape, it will be sold? to NHN. I haven't been keeping tabs on the situation but that is the story I was given a few months ago. I want to say 904 had a fire or mechanical failure a few years ago which sidelined it. If its a good runner, it should be a good addition since it is equipped with PTC.

Somewhere along the line, it also got an all black paint job too.

The unit was tagged while in Rochester, so it was done likely to cover that up.
