I thought we should have a thread about the PCCs on Muni property: The cars that run on the E and F lines plus other cars in storage.

I was in San Francisco for heritage weekend and for three days after. I rode the F line a lot, but the one PCC I really wanted to ride never ran in service at all and didn't run until the Saturday after I left! For the record, the missing PCC was #1074 which is ex Newark and painted in Toronto colours. I wanted to ride that car because I'm from Toronto even though it's not one of the 745 PCCs Toronto once rostered.

I saw #1056 (Kansas City) in the yard where I got a couple photos of 1074. I also saw some of the PCCs Muni has in storage a few blocks away.

If you could decide what cars would run on the "F" line one day what would you choose: I'm adding some rules:

1. At least one Milan Witt

2. At least 2 ex Newark (1070 series)

3. At least 2 ex SEPTA (1050 series)

4. No more than 3 double ended (Baby 10s; got to leave room for the E line)

For me I would choose the following cars:

1074 (Toronto), 1072 (Mexico City), 1040 (Original Muni PCC), 1061 (Pacific Electric), 1062 (Louisville), 1077 (Birmingham), 1079 (Detroit), 1818 (Milan Witt in green livery), 1058 (Chicago)

I would like to see the following:

1. 3 Milan cars, in the yellow & white, green, and orange liveries, plus all others operable.
2. Both 1070 (for Minneapolis) and 1071 (for Public Service Coordinated Transport), since 1070 actually operated in Mpls in the livery it now carries, and 1070 carried both its present livery and the original one, in revenue service.

Additionally, 1052 (Los Angeles Railway), 1076 (San Diego), and 1080 (Los Angeles Transit Lines), because of their California association.

Switch those numbers. 1070 is painted PSNJ, and 1071 is painted TCRT.

Back in both 2010 and 2014, I tried to ride the Toronto PCC car while I was in town but it wasn't on. On the 2014 trip, I asked down at the Market St Museum & Gift Shop which I was told in there that that PCC car itself is very temperamental and that week I was there, it apparently didn't like trying to drive over a broom handle...

I heard awhile ago that Muni plans to repaint three of the ex SEPTA 1050 series PCCs.

1050 will be repainted from the SF Wings scheme into St. Louis (even though they have some original St. Louis cars including 1704 which is restored to its as delivered livery and number, but is inoperatable.)

1063 will be repainted from the Baltimore yellow livery to the original Baltimore livery (like original Baltimore PCC 7407 at the Baltimore Streetcar Museum).

1062 will be repainted from Louisville to Pittsburgh colours. To me, I'm disappointed Muni is doing away with Louisville, even though they ordered PCCs but they never operated them. For those familiar with Kenosha's PCCs, car 4609 (Pittsburgh) was originally to be painted in Louisville, but they thought Louisville's scheme was too ugly so they ended up doing Pittsburgh.

At the end of March, PCC 1060 was FINALLY returned to Muni. 1050 has now gone to Brookville for rebuilding.

The first two cars that have been rebuilt (1056 and 1051) are now back in service.
