MTA Metro-North Railroad last week completed replacement of the 6th Avenue Bridge in downtown Mount Vernon, New York, a month ahead of schedule.

Work to replace the 126-year-old bridge — which carries traffic and pedestrians over Metro-North’s New Haven Line — began in March 2019.

The project included demolition of the old bridge and road decks, and rehabilitation of the bridge’s masonry abutments. Crews then installed replacement girders and concrete decks of the bridge, and relocated signal cables.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has opened the newly rebuilt Third Avenue Bridge in downtown Mt. Vernon, New York, along a MTA Metro-North Railroad line.

The bridge is the fourth that the MTA has opened in downtown Mt. Vernon in three years, and the second in three months, authority official said in a news release. The 14th Avenue Bridge re-opened on July 3, 2019; the 6th Avenue Bridge re-opened on Sept. 12, 2020; and the 10th Avenue Bridge re-opened on June 2, 2021.
