STAMFORD: TRAIN HITS TRUCK A Metro-North Railroad train hit a truck at a crossing in the Springdale area of Stamford at about 11:40 a.m. on Saturday, shearing off the front end of the truck. The driver of the truck fled on foot. No one was injured in the accident along the New Canaan branch of Metro-North's New Haven Line, The Advocate of Stamford reported yesterday. All 39 passengers were evacuated. The unidentified driver of the mulch truck, which is owned by Mulchmaster Plus LLC of Wallingford, apparently slowed to a stop in front of the railroad signals on Riverbend Drive South, which were operating properly, said Joe Kanell, supervisor of operations for the New Haven Line. "The guy just kind of inched out into the crossing," Mr. Kanell said. The police had not found the driver or determined whether there was a passenger in the truck. The owners of the company declined to comment. (AP)
