This morning, the last decommissioned 4000-series rail car left our rail yard for the scrap yard. These cars, along with the 1000-series, have been out of passenger service since last summer, leading to improved reliability and fewer offloads. Up next, we’ll start retiring the 5000-series.

The 5000 series were manufactured by CAF. It was the first time they manufactured railcars for an American transit system. They are almost as unreliable as the 4000 series and so Metro calls them lemons and the board decided to retire them early instead of doing the mid-life overhaul. These cars are 17 years old

Known problems with the 5000 series:
- When they were new, they were known to derail in railyards
- electrical problems - one car had a little fire when it was new
- A/C problems. Common to have hot cars in the summertime for this series
