And the party doesn't stop there. A new direct "wine train" linking London with the vineyards of Bordeaux is in the planning stage and could be whisking Brits on five-hour trips to the south of France by 2026.

It's hoped it could be the first of several new routes linking London with European cities including Cologne, Frankfurt, Geneva, Marseille and Toulouse. Dyan Crowther, CEO of HS1, the UK's first high-speed railway, tells CNN, "We are keen to expand our network and grow through new international routes."

Interesting point; all my trips on Eurostar were before Brexit, so Customs matters didn't arise. I wonder what the situation is now: if the tunnel is now a duty-free zone they'd have to add a baggage car, with attendants collecting passengers' orders before reaching the tunnel and delivering the goods after emerging on the other side. Or could they do it airline style, with shops at the terminals?

Come to think of it, how does it work today if you fly from London to Berlin?
