Matthew Leech, CEO of DP World Americas Region at the time, gave the rough timing on that. The extra surface equipment is not cheap, so it was always going to be a JIT type of acquisition. With the crane count going to 6, this time fits their plan:

If the CPKC and CN lockout occurs on Aug. 22, Saint John will be the only port in Canada with rail service (and a connection to CSX). I don't really expect that situation to last long, if at all, but it seems like a better than 50% possibility right now.

Owing to the possibility of a walk/lock out this week at the two Canadian roads, Maersk has already announced an embargo of Canada bound shipments that will use rail transport.

I don't know if Maersk vessels call at Saint John, but the other maritime companies that do, will surely take like action.

Will be intersting to see if they continue to ship CSX bound containers through the Keag/NMJ if they con't ship to Canada. I believe there are height restrictions out of Maine only allowing single stack containers. If I am wrong I will leave this to the rail experts.

CSX doesn't move any containers by way of Mattawamkeag, just mixed freight. Irving isn't union so the strike doesn't apply to them it would have to drag on for a while for containers to be rooted on CSX which from what I read on facebook CP is training managers to operate trains west of jackman. That was posted by someone who I think is a CP conductor based on his profile photo. The Maine side of CP was jammed up, due to crew shortages on the Quebec side. Allegedly the guys who got furloughed decided not to come back which plugged the Maine side and Irving up pretty good.

Maersk does not currently call at Saint John.

There should be no change for MSC since ALL of their intermodal is done by truck.

For all others, I assume they will treat Saint John as Canada only, since their is no intermodal traffic with CSX until who knows...

I expect shipping lines will maintain their scheduled calls to make local deliveries until otherwise notified. The schedule at DP World has not changed significantly, if at all.

At least some traffic is likely to be diverted to US ports.

Maersk update dated 8-20-24 11:51 AM:
"We can confirm that we continue to accept bookings to and from Canada, including ocean, rail, truck and air. As the situation remains ongoing and developing, we are in close contact with local officials and authorities as well as partners on the ground and continue the situation. We endeavor to keep you informed of developments that may occur that impact your supply chain with Maersk."

Well Mr. KuBand, Mediterranean Shipping certainly represents someone that once her claws grow, i.e. the MEC gets patched up, Chessie could grab.

Apparently the former CMQ guys are under a different labor contract, which allowed this train to move to St. Luc.

The lockout/strike has gone to arbitration and it's been ruled no further work stoppages from either side are allowed. They should restart trains on 12:01 AM Monday.
