Railway Age magazine had an interesting article titled: "PSLR (Precision Short Line Railroading)" which talks about the benefits that shortline railroads provide to both customers and Class I railroads.

They used slides and stats from G&W discussing Pennsylvania and had some interesting numbers.
Specifically they showed two maps which illustrated how the entire state of Pennsylvania is actually covered by more miles of short line than Class I service. They showed 2267 miles of Class I trackage, and 2548 miles of Class II/III trackage.
Anyways, I thought that was interesting.
