A weather office can't predict flash flooding or trees falling on the tracks. The creeks and runoff from the hills aren't monitored like the rivers are, and there usually aren't roads parallel to the tracks to get any visual reports.

We were at our TN property, west of the harder hit areas. Only lost a couple of trees, but hundreds of branches mostly from older/dead pines.

TN and Western NC have very tall trees (65-80 ft averages) with very shallow root systems. Soak them in rain for a couple hours after almost two months without rain, and it doesn't take much to topple over when the ground turns to mud.

Plus they are "breeding" timber trees to have smaller roots , bigger tops. Only going to get worst.

I don't know that this is a "breeding" issue as much as it is soil composition. The clay in parts of the South is like concrete, and the roots just can't penetrate. As for the tops.... they're no good to the lumber mills. I've taken down about 50 large trees and perhaps 100 saplings, and these trees are 75-80%% trunk, 20-25% top branches and foliage.

By tops , i mean't above soil. Yes , larger trunks is what they are after.

Western NC was part of my early years until about 40 Years old. NC DOT does not even have an idea of what damages are to the highways as it admits there have been no reports from many of their station locations. crazy but I-40 near Tennessee report says will be fixed September 1 2025 yes 2025.
It may be next weekend before NC even has an idea of damages. Main item is that roads need to be cleared as soon as possible so utility crews can do needed repairs. As well food, medicine, & water. Water especially as many water treatment plants are out of service or worse for an extended time. It is important that IMO that NS gets the rails up and running to bring in supplies that may have road problems. I-40 down and I-26 from Tennessee will need fixing in both states,

Then many persons will need cooler weather clothing because by this time of year the nights can become cool or sometimes even an early frost,

Some sign of "normalcy"; as of a few moments ago, the website reports that 98(30) is "on its way" and 52(30) is to depart on schedule 5P.

However, 92(30) will only operate to JAX and is CX North of there.

From Amtrak:
Silver Service

Train 91 is canceled between New York (NYP) and Jacksonville (JAX).
Train 92 is canceled between Jacksonville (JAX) and New York (NYP).

Palmetto Service

Train 89 is canceled between Washington (WAS) and Savannah (SAV).
Train 90 is canceled between Savannah (SAV) and Washington (WAS).

Interesting to learn, Mr. Wolf.

As I noted earlier, the website reports that #98 (30) was enroute to NY and that 52 (30) would operate.

Yet they have annulled 89 & 90 (30) off the Corridor.

Seems incongruous to me.

I checked the historic record and it looks like 98 and 92 was just truncated down to between Miami and Jacksonville.

I think the question here is has CSX gotten the track washouts repaired enough for the Auto Train et al to go through?

Checking this morning off https://asm.transitdocs.com and... looks like the tracks are repaired and had a slow zone or four through affected areas. AutoTrain 52(30) left late but only incurred 33 minutes of delay on the line. Silver Meteor 98/97 (30) got through. Looks like we'll have service resumptions soon.

Please give whatever you can for flood relief

I've "done my part" through the United Way of North Carolina, but if you wish to give through another 501(c)(3) charity, here's a list:

I don't see how this affects woods trees, residential properties, or ROW trees. This goes to tree farms.

Pine trees spread their seeds far and wide. Neighbor just had one of the (new) breed fall but did not hit anything.
