• How is rail cargo handled at seaports?

  • For topics on Class I and II passenger and freight operations more general in nature and not specifically related to a specific railroad with its own forum.

In light of the ILA strike I've been wondering how to tasks of handling rail cargo at the seaports are split between railroad workers and the longshoreman.

Longshoreman remove containers, bulk/break and some other commodities from the ship using cranes. Once it's off the ships, other workers do the rest of the handling on the ground.

Longshoremen handle many tasks within Marine Terminals in addition to getting cargo on or off vessels. They also move the cargo to locations where outside contacts take 'ownership' of their cargo.

When Longshoremen strike - the entirety of the Marine Terminal is shut down. Being a longshoreman is a demanding and dangerous form of employment as cargo weighing many tons is constantly in motion - motion that can place personnel in a position to be squashed like a bug.
