This past Sunday (Jan. 8th) I happened to catch a show on The History Channel involving avalanches in the Sierra Nevada and the Southern Pacific's "City Of San Francisco" being trapped by an avalanche in January of 1952.
The show is due to be repeated on January 23rd at 12 & 6 PM (Eastern) and is titled "The Wrath Of God-Snowbound:The Curse Of The Sierra".
The whole show is not about the train, it also talks about the Donner Party and a more recent avalanche in the early 1990s. However, the segment on the City Of San Francisco does include black and white footage of the snowbound train, being pulled by SP Alco PA's, rotary plows and a relief train, made up of Harriman cars, being pulled by a cab-forward 4-8-8-2.
One of the interviewees is Robert J. Church who wrote a book about this incident titled "Snowbound Streamliner Rescuing the 1952 City of San Francisco". For more information on the book:
