Railroad Explorer announces the publication of Alcos Northeast: Beyond Schenectady- Smoke, Guts, and Glory 1969-2006

The publishers of Railroad Explorer are gearing up to produce an all-Alco album featuring these tireless survivors of the locomotive industry. In Alcos Northeast: Beyond Schenectady- Smoke, Guts, and Glory 1969-2006 Mike Confalone and Joe Posik are looking to showcase Northeastern railroads that continued to use Alcos and MLWs since Schenectady's closure in 1969. "Dramatic photography of Alcos in action in the Northeast will be the ruling theme," said Confalone.

Why this topic? The last comprehensive book on this subject was Scott Hartley's excellent New England Alcos in Twilight published in 1984. "Alcos Northeast will be much broader in focus," Confalone explained, "Not only covering the waning years of Alco usage on Class 1's, but also the explosion of Alco-powered shortlines and regionals in the entire Northeast." This latest project will bring Alco lovers up-to-date with photos of their favorite locomotives in action from across the region.

The book will be published by Railroad Explorer, who released the impressive Rails Across New England in 2005. Early plans are for a minimum of 160 pages, soft cover with a landscape (oblong) layout, similar to Rails Across New England. All pre-press scanning will be done in house, with a focus on best in class color reproduction. Printing will be performed by Cummings Printing of Hooksett, New Hampshire. Target publication date is November 2006

Confalone and Posik are looking for photographers to contribute material towards the project. If one or more of your photos is used in the book, you will receive a complimentary copy. Here are the guidelines for contributing:

Color slides or high-resolution raw digital images only. Slides must be organized in a clear plastic sheet only.  No boxes or loose slides please. Each slide must have the photographer’s name, address and email address if applicable. Please provide a typed or hand-written page with a full caption, or at least basic subject matter information (subject, location and date) for each slide. Digital images should be burned to CD with the same accompanying data. Please provide a large self-addressed, stamped envelope for return of material. Regarding subject matter, roster shots as well as scenic, action photos are welcome.

Deadline for submissions is May 1, 2006/ Please send your material to:
