From Bahnhof Frankfurt/Oder DE--

This is deep in the heart of East Germany (DDR) and closer to the Poland frontier than it is to Berlin (better known on the East Side of the Oder R). But nevertheless, a Berlin S-Bahn pass is good to get here (€49,00 for a week).

Here's an engine that hasn't seen a paintbrush at least since 1990.

From Frankfurt/Oder Banhof---

I must wonder if this was in revenue service at the end of the DDR;

Could well have been!

From Steigenberger Hotel, Berlin---

I've now learned that my S-Bahn pass was no good to go as far East as Frankfurt/Oder. So I guess I'm just another farebeater :( :(

Sorry DB, it was quite unintentional.

As much as it would have been nice to have had a closer look at that steam locomotive at Frankfurt/Oder last week, "little Yellow Man" was saying "Nein":

Not sure why the attachment option now adds photos sideways (Hello, Mr. Primrose), but somebody wants the Deutsche Reichbahn to live on.

I have no knowledge if this engine is in active service or is a museum piece (much as I.sus
suspect is the case with the steam locomotive)

Thanks for the great pictures.

An even better pass is the Deutschland-Ticket with is currently €49,00 for a month of free travel on all forms of public transit in Germany, except for the ICE, IC and EC trains.

Anyone looking to purchase this ticket when traveling to Germany should consult the page linked below, unless you have a German bank account.

Good point Mr. Train 60 (Amtrak Montrealer,? PRR Pittsburgher?); had I opened a Euro denominated bank account and bought that pass, I guess I would have been "legal".

I guess if they came around to check to or from Frankfurt am Oder (they did on the return, but I was "on limits" when they did, so no issue) , I just would have paid up. If no one checked, I could have ridden to Magdeburg, or otherwise, the entire breadth of the DDR (East Germany).

A "sin, at least in my Episcopalian religious training, is when you KNOW you are doing wrong; so I guess so far as the Episcopal Church goes, I did not sin :-) .

Now to close off topic that I hope Mr. Benton will allow, was thinking back to my 1990 trip on the DBB and DR to Berlin. At the frontier point of Magdeburg, there was the barbed wire and at the station were the "goons" looking under the train with mirrors looking for fugitivies. Rather "creepy" in view of that the DDR only had months to live.
