Just saw some photos on facebook of the Chemung river bridge in Athens..looks fine..no obvious visible damage.
no sinking of a pier, like in '72..(people were walking across the bridge all day yesterday, to get out on the Chemung river flood wall..kinda foolish IMO, but it gave good views of Athens..I havent been down to Athens myself yet.)
In some places, the flood has been equal, or even worse, than Agnes, in other places, not nearly as bad..
Wilkes Barre's flood wall held, so they will be saying not NEARLY as bad as Agnes there..
Susquehanna numbers for Waverly-Sayre-Athens, 1972 compared to 2011:
21.24 feet. - Maximum height of the Susquehanna in 1972, Agnes.
22.52 feet - flood of June 2006, river did not break through the flood wall.
25.76 feet - September 8, 2011, river broke through wall.
In Harrisburg, the Susquehanna is forecast to crest at 27.5 feet tomorrow (Saturday)
6 feet less than Agnes, which was 32.6 feet.
So some areas are "worse than Agnes"..but overall, taking in the scope of both floods as a whole, this flood isnt as bad as Agnes..
not to say it isnt bad! but Agnes still holds the record for total scope of damage..She covered a much larger area, and flood walls built since '72 have (mostly) been working this time..West side of Sayre and Athens being a notable exception, the wall failed utterly there.
