Have some been retired? Was looking at a recent roster and noticed some number gaps with missing numbers in their GP40's that I didn't recall being there at one time.

Also when did they retire their last EMD switchers and the GP9's? I kind of figured they'd of disappeared over the past 10 years, but never had any kind of confirmation until now that they were.

Here's an idea, Leo, why not put that roster up here, and let the guys (and gals) fill in the blanks. A lot easier, if we can see what you are working with. Thanks!

Here's what I found, and there are no gaps, initially.........

Saw a picture on another web site of one of the GP-40's (722) on a New England Central train the picture is dated Oct 28 of this year. not sure of the location other than it was in CT. and the engine is still painted in FEC Colors with its FEC Number.

Your list has DE 420 and 424 with the same builders number.

What about 448-453?

The list also shows the 424 was rebuilt from #420, so, it would have the same same builders number, on the frame ;)

The rest of the GP-40 roster might look something like this:

FEC 448 GP40-3 34333 28 15535 ex-PC
FEC 449 GP40-3 34334 14 36688 ex-PC
FEC 451 GP40 34139 3 15536 ex-MILW
FEC 452 GP40 32488 2 15537 ex-MILW
FEC 453 GP40 35472 3 ex-MKT

I will add this above, too.

If it was an unchanged number, then it wasn't a GP-40. The 700 series are SD-40's, and that particular unit would have been an ex-UP locomotive.

All I know is what the poster for the Picture wrote under it. I jsut thought i would pass along it was seen. To tell the truth I couldn't tell the differnece between a gp 40 an da B23-7. as for the number that is what I saw in the pic. I do not want to post a link to it with out permission of the poster.

The GP-40 would be the fast one, the B-23-7 would be the smokey one......:P Feel free to post links to offsite photos. Don't "hotlink", and don't post the pictures themselves. Thanks for the info!!!

Hello GOLDEN-ARM,

The 424 was not rebuilt from the 420 as both are still running on the FEC. The builder numbers have to be diferent.

The parts from the 402 were traded back to EMD for unit exchange parts (engine, AR-10, aux. gen., etc) to be used in the 424. The frame and body were new so that makes it a new locomotive, not a rebuilt one. 424 was a new locomotive built with rebuilt parts.

The 402 was not rebuilt into the 424 as you and other people say. After the 402 was wrecked, EMD wanted the engine, AR10, air compressor, aux generator back for a trade in on the 424 to get the cost down. They were shipped in a gondola to EMD, but these were never used in the 424. The 424 was built new.

A couple of FYI's.

There were some errors in the original Roster that I compiled, and Wayne Eckert posted. I have made numerous corrections and updates (mostly to builder numbers and build dates) and provided a copy to Wayne. He is checking through it and should have it posted on various FECRS websites shortly.

The new roster includes all the former UP SD40-2 info with correct builder numbers and build dates (I also happen to be a UP freak).

GP40-2 402 was wrecked and usable parts were traded to EMD. 424 is a new loco, however the trucks may have been used (FEC traded GP9's on their GP40-2's and the trucks were re-used - that is why FEC GP40-2's and GP38-2's do NOT have Blomberg M trucks).

The leased GP40-2's from 448 up were added to the roster, along with their original owners, builder numbers and builder dates (I think I could not find one of the build dates other than "1970").

The SD70M-2's were also added to the roster with builder numbers and build dates.

Finally, the GP40-2's and SD40-2's that I have documentation for, are shown as being moved to AGR or NECR. This data is changing daily, however.

The first FEC GP-40-2s, DE 411-418, came Blomberg M trucks. The Blomberg M trucks are rougher riding than the regular Blombergs, they don't stop as well and are more prone to over riding brake shoes. I wouldn't be surprised to find out on subsequent orders specified regular Blombergs for those reasons.
Which truck came under an engine depended on what was ordered or if it was specified that traded in trucks were to be used.

Aha! Thanks for the info. I checked and 411-418 were delivered with Blomberg M trucks but, from photos online, it appears that 411-415 and 417 still have M's, 416 and 418 have now been equipped with Blomberg B's. Maybe I'll have to model one of those (411-415), since I now have an overabundance of Blomberg M truck sideframes after swapping them out on 434, 445, 447, 507 and 509. Also, note that the GP38-2's have 3,600 gal fuel tanks, the GP40-2's purchased new have 2,600 gal fuel tanks, and the GP40-2's leased or purchased used have either (as the original RR ordered). These are listed on my updated roster.
