I haven't heard any timeframe as to when the first set of rebuilt F40s will be placed into service but if I had to guess, I'd say sometime in the spring of 2009. This is based on it taking about a year for the work at CAD to be completed followed by two or three months testing. While these units will be quite different from 6400 on the inside, I don't expect to see much difference on the outside.

According to this link http://www.canadianrailwayobservations. ... /index.htm the rest of the F40 rebuilds are having a separate HEP generator installed, and hence will have the body extended on the chassis. This means the rear platform and steps will not be there, the body shell will extend all the way to the back.

While Amtrak wasted our tax payers money on a fleet of POS locomotives to replace there F40 fleet VIA does this. We should get rid of Amtrak and pay VIA to run trains here.

I get some update about this,I pass by this month and I get lucky,I seen the 6402 in the yard, but take a picture from a bus over the higway,I not the ideal :-)
but we can't see the extended cab(sorry for the poor quality)

there,an unusual move..I caugh the 6400 birnging the 6444 to CAD à Lachine, the 6444 get a problem this time and it was pulled by the 6400,the 6444 will be on the list for rebuilting
Image

and there, the 6437 last september,it was waiting too, maybe in the rebuilt list for now,by the way it look on the pic, they must rebuilt it before put back in service..
Image

I stay all the time next to my scanner, cause I want to see the first move of the 6402..
I live at around 20 minutes of bike, from Cad Lachine and I pass by every week with the bus,so I always see what's in in the yard all the time

just to make this a bit funny,it's there,at Lachine,I seen for the first time a pink loco :-) It's there since few years and it's written on it "US ARMY" on the sides, but with all this time,It's not look like when they put that engine there, the funny ting, this engine still working great, but with a lot of smoke :-D

so far only 6400 is the only one to be compleatly rebuilt. if the p42s are a POS then why did VIA rail by them hmmmm. yes they broke down alot but those LRC locos were no better.

Hey guys!

I'm sure many of you are aware that VIA F40PH-(?) #6402 is out of the shops, after its rebuild. It is supposed to be the model for the rest of the rebuilds, as opposed to prototype #6400.

Since noone had posted them on here yet, here are photos of 6402 painted, but unlettered, on April 1st at CAD.

What does everyone think?

Most of the comments I've heard have been something like "Ewww, Yuck!". While the shroud around the HEP engine on the rear of the unit is a bit bulkier than I'd like, overall I don't think it's that bad.

Thanks for that link Montrealrail. It's neat to see the unit up and running, and fully lettered!

It will be interesting to see the rest of the units when they're finished. The indications I've heard seem to point towards them being done in the fashion of 6402, rather than 6400. I'm guessing these rounds of testing will confirm that.

It is starting to look more like VIA likes the 3-headlight idea, although one might wonder why 6400 didn't get the 3 lights.

While I know many people aren't, and won't be fond of the bulky HEP generator covering at the back, I don't mind it. I think it adds a certain character to the locomotives, although I think it should be made to match the profile of the locomotive's roof, so it would look more natural.

I will say though that, as a modeler, I thought VIA's F40's were already enough of a pain to model accurately. And now, well....they're most definitely going to be unique.

So let me ask the stupid question - what happened to 6401 - is it still in the shops for rebuild/overhaul? And what's the difference between 6400 (the prototype) and 6402?

I would think these engines would blend in much better with the Renaissance train sets - and especially the Ocean. Not sure how well I like them against VIA's HEP stainless steel cars, but at least they have some "lighter" colors to blend in! Is VIA planning this color scheme to all its F40s? Has the money been appropriated to get all of them done?

Gotta love VIA. They chose to rebuild these units, along with their stainless steel fleet inherited largely from the Canadian Pacific, while Amtrak retired these units with ease of mind. Course I know the VIA F40s are a little newer than what Amtrak had.

for the 6401,it still with the Spiderman colors
Image

and for the 6400 difference with the 6402,the 6402 get an extended cab on the back and a new inscription on the sides
Image

and the 6400,get the same shape than a usual F40PH2

and I eared about the LRC cars will be repainted with Renaissance colors,I just imagin the colors, that will be look bizarre with the renaissance colors on LRC car..

As Montrealrail indicated, 6401 is still out on the road in daily service. The other units currently at CAD for rebuilding are 6437,6443,6452,6454 and 6457 (I believe). The main difference between 6402 and 6400 is the additional HEP generator, while there are several other changes as well. Funds have been allocated by the government to rebuild the entire F40PH-2 roster and refurbish all of the active LRC cars (does not include the former Amtrak LRCs). As for the LRC coaches, the work will be done by IRSI in Moncton, NB and, while I've heard they will be done in Ren colours, I've also heard they will look much the same as they do today when completed, maybe a slightly different shade of grey. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Oh the F40 is looking good after the rebuild I especially like the extended end no catwalk on the end its now part of the cab, this is a great improvement for the purpose of aerodynamics.

And seriously there repainting the LRC's oh a rebuild is good but a repaint in a different scheme Im not so sure of. Well I'll have to wait and see, then judge. I'm just so use to the current scheme changing it seems weird. Im figuring darken the Gray, brighten the yellow stripe, and change the bottom Blue to the Renaissance Green, and cover up the strip of gray between the yellow and blue with Ren. green ? or is that to conservative?

Thank you Montrealrail! Those are a couple of very nice shots, and that was a great consist to catch!

Please do continue to post any photos of 6402 you might get....that goes for anyone else as well! They are all very much appreciated.
