I am looking for pictures of both the DL&W and the Erie stations in
Elmira, NY. I am interested in photos of the Erie station that include
the old freight section before its removal and pictures that include
the elevated track (1960's).
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Eric

Have a xerox of an article from the Elmira Star-Gazette dated June 19, 1969 that shows the Elmira DL&W station both in 1918 and being demolished. Will be glad to send you a copy.

that must be an earlier Erie station then, (that was torn down in 1918)
because the current Erie station still stands.

and the existing stations site says the current Elmira station was built in 1867..

could have been a station in another part of Elmira that was torn down in 1918? Southport perhaps?

And the DL&W must have had an Elmira station at least until the EL merger in 1960..
so the tearing down of two stations in 1918 isnt making much sense to me..

from:

it says "UNKNOWN #2 is the Elmira, NY station before they elevated the track. There is a similar photo on page 59 of Bill Caloroso's book on the PRR Elmira Branch that shows the station from the front (trackside) about the same era"

and here is a postcard, circa 1915.

anyone know when, and why, the clocktower was removed?

Umm.....Scot: The Elmira Star-Gazette article mentioned above dealt with the demolition of the DL&W Elmira passenger station, located on Dickinson Street. The article includes two photos of the station, one taken of it in 1918 and another taken in June, 1969. The age of the station at the time of demolition was given as fifty-six years, so it was constructed in 1913. The last use of the station was in September 1959 when the Erie and DL&W combined operations through the southern tier prior to their 1960 merger.

oh! ok..
I thought you said both the Erie and the DL&W station were demolished in 1918! just misread the meaning of the word "both"..

I read:
dated June 19, 1969 that shows the Erie and DL&W station, both in 1918, and (both) being demolished.

sorry! ;)

Was at school in Elmira till a couple of years ago. The station does indeed still stand and its actually in better shape than any of the pictures show. Not much better, but a little better. A company across the street is using it as storage. (Hilliard Corporation). I believe this is accurate still.

henry: The link relates error. Is the old DL&W station platform remains finally being demolished?

No, the story covers painting a new mural on the elevated Erie structure, where the time-worn "ERIE" mural once was.
