I've been trying to find some info on this locomotive, but dont know much about locomotives of the time, if anyone can at least identify the builder of it that'd be great...

Heres a list of the locomotives that the railroad operated, I'm pretty sure its not built by Rogers so I'm guessing its got to be built by either Smith & Perkins or William Swineburne

Bucyrus6150-While I can't help you personally, may I suggest that you try the Yahoo Civil War Railroad group? You'll find some very knowledgeable (and passionate!) folks who could give you all the information you'd like. (PM me for details if you're not familiar with Yahoo Groups.)

After checking out the link provided in the first post I went to my copy of Civil War Railroads by George B. Abdill. I found the same photo on page# 27.

Unfortunately the caption provides little information. It simply states "The only identification connected with this photo is that the scene reportedly was taken on the Orange & Alexandria Railroad in 1862. The engine probably belongs to the O&A, although the possibility exists that she may have been one of the older locomotives purchased from other lines by the U. S. Military Railroad."

I remember reading this post a while back and I don't know if the locomotive has already been identified but, I just found that picture in Civil War Railroads & Models by Edwin P. Alexander. The caption underneath states" One of the Newcastle-built locomotives acquired from the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad, probably the Maryland "I can't say that this is correct but it is what the book says.
I hope it helps.

Looks way older than Civil War era to me..
based on the Boiler and overall technological level, I would guess that is a 1840's era loco..

I've done a bit more research on them since I posted that and found that this type is at least pre-1855...
