If it meant that my kids are less likely to be run over by a train or my grandparents are more likely to have the ambulance arrive in time to save their life? Probably.

It of course is going to be a big mistake not doubling all the trackage. Look at Cal Train becoming 2 mains able to run 15 minute headways with their 2 main tracks. There is just no way a RR can be run with those headways without all tracks 2 main tracks.
