I was reading through Chris Baer's list of CNJ stations & facilities and something struck me. I never knew that the DL&W had their own coaling docks & facilities at Elizabethport.
Evidently, the Broadway Branch (the line down Broadway in Elizabethport) was the original CNJ mainline before they built the first bridge over Newark Bay to Bayonne and on to Jersey City. The DL&W piers were first built in 1856, north of the CNJ piers etc. I guess this would be between Broadway and the Singer plant. Must be where the park is along the waterfront.
They even built the Port Avenue Branch in 1856 to form a loop for moving DL&W trains to their piers without interfering with CNJ traffic.
I always knew the DL&W had trackage rights from Hampton Junction east, but never really thought about where they ended up. Anybody know if it was CNJ power and crews east of Hampton, or did the DL&W run though all the way to Elizabethport with their own power & crews?
