This morning I saw a pretty interesting train consist heading west out of Stamford on track 2.

leading car: GP #101
two Bombardier cabs
two Bombardier trailers
GE P32 #221
last car: GE P40 #833

this is the first time I've ever seen the NOSE end of a GE pulling another car!

by trailer I mean a car without controls at one of the ends. Even despite the other parts of the consist, I thought it was strange to see two control cabs in a row.

Yes, 101 was pulling the consist. 833 had its taillights on, but I don't know if either engines were pushing (I doubt it).

Sounds to me like the equipment was being hauled to a shop.

It's not that strange in my neck of the woods. I've been on a few trains that have had two cab cars, and in most instances, the cab cars were adjacent in the consist. I'm pretty sure I was on one last week...

Not so uncommon on NJT. In fact, it looks a bit sloppy if that happens, especially with comet threes and fours. With comet 4s and 5s, it can slow up the dwell time a little. Good thing, all of MN's shoreliners have end doors .

There are some shoreliner III cab units that do not have doors at the engineer's position. Normally this is a non-issue when the cab is not used (i.e. Northbound trains) since the conductor often operates the doors and stores his/her gear in that cab, and depending on how many cars are in the consist, the end doors on the rear car may not reach the platform.

When mutiple cab units are used in a consist, it can affect the dwell time here too :(

The consist you observed was the AM Protect (MN101-GP35) pulling 1319's consist with Unit210 -P32 and Unit 833 -P40 trailing. 833 was tagged on to go for service.
