During the "power shortage" of 1988, 1989, I was fortunate enough (unfortunate?) to be called from the AFHT hotel in Philly, to relieve a coal train at CP Falls, to run to SK. (my regular turn was SEPY/PYSE). Much to my chagrin (delight?) was a coal train, waiting at River, with 5 GP-10 locos, fresh out of storage, and a GP-35. This accumulation of rolling derelicts never made it to transition speed, except for approaching the Junction, at Manville. Between alarm bells, extreme wheel slippage, and thick, voluminous clouds of blue smoke, infiltrating the cab (running hammerhead
) the trip was memorable as one of the worst road trains, I had ever run, up to that point in time. Those locos were later assigned to Harrisburg, where they were yard switchers, and I recall them running in Enola, as well. On several occasions, those GP-35's, and even GP-30's would appear on a train, when things got "tight". Never saw them again, after about 1992, although the Harrisburg ramp job occasionally had one, or two, in use, at that time. As things have ended up, I occasionally get blessed, with the opportunity, to run one of these "junkers", and the memories they bring up are still as bad as I remember.................
