Sorry for the cross post but I thought this board might be able to help. We are looking for recent pics of the eight Comet cars stored at Port Jervis. If you have any or can take some please let me know off the board. It would save us a 3+ hour one way trip to check them out. We have been told that these cars were hit hard , poss fire damage in the last few months.
Thanks,

I dont have pictures, but have recently seen them.

All eight cars have no windows intact. Many of the seets have been ripped out, lit on fire, or burned inside the coach. the cars themselves have become a drug/sex/"devil worship" hut for people in that area.

I found used condoms all over the floors, huge pentagraphs marked on the sides in red spray paint, and messages like "join us" and others.

From what happened to these coaches in such a short period of time, I would say they deserve to be scrapped immediatly. Plus, I'm starting to wonder that if someone in these trains gets hurt or something (drug overdose, fights, etc) would Metro-North be responsible?

Its a pretty sad situation though. I say bring em down to Harrison or something and scrap em.

Well, I DO have photos, but they are over a year old and dont do any justice to how they look today.

Budd built very good cars. Send them out for a total rebuild and be good as new. Then they'll be running well like the Arrows.

Too bad Budd didn't build these cars. If they are true "Comets" they were built by Pullman-Standard. If they are "Shoreliners" they were built by Bombardier.

These cars in question (Comet I-As) were built by Budd using unused Arrow III shells in 1978.

Aha! Thank you for correcting me. I thought we were referring to a different car type entirely. Didn't realize we were talking about the demotored Arrow's.

On a rail trip to Port Jervis last summer I saw the coaches. No time to really check them out, just time for lunch. Sad to hear the shape they are in now...

They still remain on a weeded and overgrown siding just west of the Metro-Nprth yard past the bridge. there is a brown MoPac Hopper parked on the same siding in front of them. the cars themselves have been so consumed by trees that they are hard to see from a distance now.

Its sad.

Why were they left there in the first place?

KFRG and I made a trip up to Port Jervis yesterday evening and got some photos to post here. The Comet cars are still on the siding west of the bridge that goes over the yard next to the MoPac hopper. All of the windows are pushed out on the cars, the glass inside the cars have been broken and they have been heavily vandalized, though have not been torched yet. We encountered a homeless person under a blanket inside one of the cars, too. It's obvious someone uses these cars to bring girls to from the writings on the wall, but I won't post what they say. You'll have to go see for yourself! I uploaded a bunch of photos to my Webshots page, so check that out here: http://community.webshots.com/album/409294513zAPHtx

We also visited Suffern yard and took some shots around there which are on the Webshots page as well. Overall, it was a pretty cool night. Check out the photos and let us know what you think.
