CP had a DuPont rebuild program for the other F barns and the SD40-2's, but I don't think any more have been done in a year or so. Pretty much they were just painting them and doing some minor upgrades to keep them in service.

I was just questioning why it's presence at that location seemed to indicate to some it was going for a rebuild.

AFAIK 9017 and one blue barn (forget which) are considered by CP as heritage units with attached orders to stay in current scheme (unless those orders have been rescinded) , but there also seemed to some concern about it getting painted red, so I was just asking why there was any reason to think either a rebuild or repaint was happening (beyond the usual railfan doom and gloom speculation about all things big and small :P )?

That was the commentary of several users on the Elkhart VR cam shortly after it passed, and from folks who generally seem to know what they're talking about on there.

However that seems not to be the case, as it has spent the last two weeks bouncing back and forth on NS between Indiana and Chattanooga.

It had been mentioned by several reputable sources in the Canadian Railway Observations group over the last few months. Granted, the orders regarding the paint job on the 9017 and the remaining CMQ painted barns (if any are left at this point) were done preCPKC, additionally the person who first put that information out on the internet hasn't had the best record with information... Or selling Vermont Rail System railfan guides...

CPKC is CP. Just appeasing the former KCS folks by throwing them a bone. I can't imagine that ownership of KCS would change anything related to CP mechanical dept. policies, other than with regard to units acquired from former KCS and some reshuffling of power to put the collective whole to best use. I would think if anything the change we shoudl fear would be to retire the SD40-2Fs, not to undo existing paint policy.

So far it seems to just be running around leased and/or balancing HP hours on NS, so hopefully 9017 is safe... I got screwed out of my one good chance to see it, and it's been out west on CP ever since.
