The History Channel again ran their 'Wrath of God' special about the SP streamliner snowed in on Donner.
They make a point of how cold it got in the train, and the inability to use train heat. I have never understood this, as the train was not completely buried and it should have been possible to keep airvents open for the steam heater to work.
Anybody have an idea what the problem was?

Offhand guess: no water to make steam. Maybe no oil, either.
