possibly George . I'm not entirely convinced changing to standard gauge is necessary . However , when the Chinese do these aid projects , they tend to do the whole thing properly , so you may be right .

I meant that the track in Cambodia is so bad that it would have at the least to be completely relaid - I doubt if it has been touched since the French left.

Whether the Chinese project intends a standard gauge line or not I have no information on, but a colonial age railway is not likely to be suitable for modern transport needs so not just the track needs changing but also the roadbed and route.

The Vietnamese section was also a colonial line but probably better engineered.

the whole area seems fascinating , George . i am seriously considering a trip up to that area , will probably be next southern winter now .
