C39-8 survivor.

Among the last of her kind, 20 year-old Norfolk Southern C39-8 #8202 idles away the weekend in Sayre, PA.

She was built in 1986 as Conrail 6004.

Recent reports say only 13 C39-8's are still operating, and all of them with NS. anyone have recent data on their status?

SCOT> WOW!! Man, thats an awesome find. I really haven't seen one of those in like 10 years around here. (Last one was working a yard job in Wayne). She looks to be in great condition, except maybe a little wear and tear especially on the engineer's side... other wise... pretty good.

latest report from Chris Toth, the NS locomotive guru, there are a total of 67 C39-8's still operating on the NS. 13 of those are former Conrail units while the remaining 54 are original NS units.
and for what its worth, the Savage Alberta RR in Canada has a fleet of 11 C39-8's, 2 of which are former NS units and the remaining 9 former CSX (originally Conrail units).

I was in Sayre PA on 9-30-2006 at about 1600 hours. A 70M-2 and a black non horsehead SD60M. Those C39-8 units are cool. I shot C39-8 8601 last weekend.

All of the NS former Conrail C39-8's are still on the roster and operational. The 8201 was stored for some time and went back into service earlier in the year. The General Electric C39-8's are some excellent engines. They look cool and perform extremely well. I ran a trio of these once (NW 8613, SOU 8615, and SOU 8632). As soon as I put it in notch 1 they wanted to fly. Never needed to go to notch 4. As for the dynamics on these, it grabs very quick even with just one unit. Sure these engines scream, chug, and smoke but they are very good at what they were meant to do...pull freight and same holds true for any of the Dash 8's from the little B32-8 to the D8-40CW.

Last June I caught 8552 moving SMS' tool car from Bridgeport (NJ) to Pavonia; it ultimately went to Penn Jersey Lines on Morrisville, PA, for rebuilding a caboose.
