Hi,

Does anyone have the ATSF number &/or a photo of GTW 79186 caboose used as the Loose Caboose Takeout, Inlet, NY?

Thanks, Roger

Does the caboose sit on an old ROW there in Inlet, or was it trucked in? It almost seems like it should be an ROW, at the bottom of a hill and all.....

The address given for this caboose is "Rt. 28".

I understand the address is Route 28 - I've driven by it countless times. But was there a railroad line into Inlet at that point? I've never stopped in or looked at the spot closely.

If memory serves, the ex-NYC row is behind the property that has the caboose. It was a branch off of the Adirondack division and has been gone for many, many years (I'll get a date over the weekend). Any of the Kudish books would have the info.

CP,

It sounds like it's time you did!

Roger - July 19, 1970 I photographed 5 ATSF cabooses in Port Huron MI, waiting to be rebuilt by GTW. I have no idea whether these 5 were all that GTW bought or if there were more. I also don't know what GTW numbers went to which ATSF cabs. But the ones I saw were ATSF 1503, 1540, 1574, 1612 and 1707. I hope this helps.

There was never a railroad in Inlet. You are thinking of Raquette Lake, which also has a caboose(ex NYC).

Thirty four ATFS cars were converted to GTW 75000 series cabooses. Among those are 1707 = 75001, 1540 = 75008, 1574 = 75009, and 1612 = 75031.

! don't list a 1503 as a conversion but there is 1 car, 75024, for which I don't have the ATSF number so it must be 1503!?

Six additional ATSF cabooses became GTW 79185 - 79190. I'm only aware of 3 of the ATSF numbers, 2265 = 79185, 2252 = 79187, and 2215 = 791??.

Thanks, Roger

The caboose came up on rail from Utica (can't recall the origination) via the MA&N local and was set off at Snow Jct.(a mile north of Remsen, NY) Adirondack Scenic ran SW-1 #68 light to Snow to pick this, and serveral other pieces of equipment up, and moved to Thendara. This was in 1993-95 timeframe. I was GM at Adirondack Scenic and the engineer on the job. I had photos someplace of this move, but can't seem to find them. You may want to try Linda Ellison or Chuck Rowlee at the Thendara office .. 315-369-6290 or 6472. Geez, sorry I can't even remember the exact year. There may be photos in the archives. Chuck was the conductor on the move if I recall.

Andy Burr from Honesdale, PA trucked the caboose from Thendara to Inlet for owner Bob Mclaughlin. Bob set it up as a rib shack. I seem to recall when the caboose arrived it was orange and black, and he repainted it red with GT markings.

There was a railroad from Carter, off the NYC to Raquette LAke that went through Eagle Bay, just south of Inlet 3-4 miles from the caboose's present location, but that was all torn out in the 1930's.

Thanks for the clarification, Jack. Proves for those of us modeling that you can use an old caboose for almost anything!

Roger - since you did not have that 1503 listed I dug out the slides and checked - no doubt that number is correct. It was there with the other 4 I mentioned so if you only had 1 GTW number unaccounted for, that's it. The cabooses were totally stripped of windows and apparently were waiting sandblasting - the ATSF numbers, whitelined, were still there but the cars were otherwise empty.

traingeek is correct - I was thinking of Eagle Bay. Should have looked in the books before I replied.

Kudish lists the following mileage for the Raquette Lake Railway (later absorbed by the Central):

0.00 Clearwater (Carter Station)
2.50 Rondaxe
3.99 Summit
5.55 Minnowbrook
5.70 Bald Mountain
7.01 Fairview
8.08 Skensowane
9.14 Eagle Bay
12.14 Uncas Road
17.89 Raquette Lake

My 1905 Empire State RR Pocket Guide omits Summit and Minnowbrook as stops (two trains each way daily).

The 1910 ETT reprinted in Adirondack Vistas omits Bald Mountain only (again, two each way daily).

In any event, Kudish notes summer of 1933 as the last year of operation, so it never could have been a candidate for transporting your caboose, but you have the updated info anyway.

Roger, are you in need of a photo of it at Inlet or are you all set with what you have?
