Interesting question, let's look for a the real answer.
Per Wiki on Superliners, Number built 479, Number in service 380 (FY23)
Some math = 380/479 x 100 = 79.33%
That means 20%, or 1 Superliner car in 5, is out of service.
Per Wiki on Amfleets,
Number built 492 Amfleet I, 150 Amfleet II
Number in service 445 Amfleet I (October 2023), 135 Amfleet II (October 2023)
More math
Amfleet 1 = 445/492 x 100 = 90.4%
Amfleet 2 = 135/150 x100 = 90%
That means 10% of Amfleet 1 and Amfleet 2, or 1 in 10, is oos.
Superliners have had twice the out of service rate as Amfleets.
So they have NOT been repaired at the same rate.

of the 99 Superliners out of service, how many have been written off and scrapped?
Also, how many are held for evidence in lawsuits and Amtrak cannot repair until released by a Court?

Great question that I do not have the inside information to answer.
Anyone working at Beech Grove would like to answer this one?
Here's an interesting link dated September 2023 for Amtrak refurbishments.
https://railfan.com/in-effort-to-resolv ... xt%20month.
Among the 63 cars that will be restored are 48 that have been in long-term storage and 15 that were damaged in derailments and other incidents.
Of the 23 Superliners returning to service, one is a coach, two are baggage coaches, two are snack coaches, three are sleepers, nine are transition sleepers, one is a dining car, and five are sightseer lounges. The remaining 40 include two Amfleet I table cars, one Amfleet II coach, 18 Horizon coaches, eight Viewliner I sleeping cars, six Viewliner II baggage cars, and five Viewliner II dining cars.

The specific 15 wrecked cars being rebuilt include 1 Amfleet II coach, 2 Viewliner II baggage cars, and 12 Superliners, as follows: 1 coach, 2 baggage coaches, 3 sleepers, 3 transition sleepers, 1 dining car, and 2 Sightseer lounges.

Whether the cars in long term storage were considered out of service in my earlier thread or not is unknown by me. I assume the 15 wrecked cars were.

bostontrainguy wrote: Tue Oct 15, 2024 10:43 am So 7 Superliner Sightseer Lounges and 5 Viewliner diners returning to service? That's great news.
Not quite, just 5 Superliner Sightseer Lounges and 5 Viewliner diners.
Am I reading it wrong? I thought the first group was just in storage and returning to service (5 Sightseers) and the second group was waiting for repairs and then returning to service (2 Sightseeers).

Yes. 63 total being returned to service; 23 Superliners and 40 Amfleets, Viewliners, and Horizons.
15 of the 63 being returned to service are wreck repairs. Those listed under wreck repairs were also listed earlier in the return to service. You're double counting the 15 wrecks.

I am hoping to go for a final ride on the Capitol in November if circumstances permit. I just learned that the Floridian may only be temporary until the Hudson river tunnel project is done.

Grab it fast. They're starting it on Nov 10th.

Kind of related: Amtrak has announced a major reduction in Empire Service due to the East River Tunnel closure including combining the Adirondack and Maple Leaf between NYP and Albany,

I wonder if some "bookie" somewhere is taking bets if this Floridian will become permanent?

After all, it is freeing up at least three scarce Private Room Superliners in which rooms can get $1000/night in season.

And lest we forget, POTUS47, be such Mr. or Madam, has at best been a "meh" regarding passenger rail. In short, make do with what you got - and hope the "stuff on the line" shows up reasonably when expected.

Aviela/Acela 2 certainly suggests that will hardly be the case with the Airos. Where oh where is Budd with their on time on budget equipment (tell you where they are; the escalators at Berlin Hbf.).

Oh, I won't be surprised if it becomes permament, but time-shifted, alongside the renewed Silver Star and Cap Limited. Three years in, they should have things sorted or have some of the Airo's running.

For LD services, the Airo trains are only going to free up, at best, Amfleet II and ViewLiner baggage cars off the Carolinian, Palmetto, and Pennsylvanian. That doesn't help with the need for ViewLiner I/II sleepers and diners for the Silver Star.
