I scanned this photo today-it was taken a long time ago in Vermont:

It seems to say "ALCOLID", cast into the steel- is this an ALCO trademark for a journal box cover?

I think it is. If you Google "Alcolid," about the third item will be what looks like an index to a 1949 volume os some railroad trade periodical that ran an article on "Alcolid" journal box covers made by the Railway Steel Spring Division of the American Locomotive Company.
